Hi Donald. You're not doing anything wrong. As far as I can tell, the
only way one can turn off voice-view is to go into voice settings in
quick settings. The two finger thing doesn't work to turn the
voice-view screenreader off.
But, if anyone knows better, give directions!
It sounds like you have the latest OS update.
As far as sound volume, try this.
From quick settings, go to settings, then sound, then focus on media
sound. There is a slider and if you double tap media sound, you can
move the volume by cranking the sound volume rocker up and down at the
top of your Fire. When it is the level you want, just exit and that
will be your new master volume. Mine is set in the low 40's.
As for the mini audio plug on the Fire, I have no problem with my
earbudds or headphones. Just make sure the plug from your phones are
pushed all the way in. The output is stereo! And, with the media
volume set as I have done, I have alot of room to go low or high on
the volume.
Note that there is a voice-view volume setting along with other
parameters that you can change. Here is the complete copy and paste
from the Amazon webpage.
But, especially note this line ... select Match device volume to use
the physical volume keys on the device to adjust the volume for the
VoiceView voice.

Use gestures to navigate your Fire tablet and interact with your
content while VoiceView describes the actions you make on screen. Help
for 4th Generation, 5th Generation, 6th Generation, and 7th Generation
Fire Tablets.
You can customize your VoiceView experience with unique user preferences.
To access settings when VoiceView is on:
1. Swipe down from the top of the screen with two fingers and then
double-tap Settings.
2. Double-tap Accessibility and then double-tap VoiceView to access
available settings.
Voiceview Settings
• Reading Speed: Adjust the speed of the VoiceView voice.
• VoiceView Volume: Set the volume level for the VoiceView voice,
select Match device volume to use the physical volume keys on the
device to adjust the volume for the VoiceView voice.
• Feedback Tone Volume: Set the volume level for the feedback tone, or
select Match device volume to use the physical volume keys on the
device to adjust the volume for the feedback tone.
• Key Echo: Determine what is echoed back to you while entering text.
By default, characters are echoed as they are typed to confirm entry.
This can be changed to none, characters, words, or both characters and
words.
• Punctuation Level: Control what punctuation marks are read aloud.
After adjusting your preferences, you can use gestures to explore what
you can do with your Fire tablet.
• Turn on VoiceView from any screen
◦ Press the Power button until you hear an alert, and then place two
fingers (slightly apart) on the screen and hold for five seconds.
• Explore menus and items
◦ Drag a finger over each item on the screen.
• Go to the next item
◦ Swipe right using a finger.
• Go to the previous item
◦ Swipe left using a finger.
• Go to next item by granularity
◦ Swipe down using a finger.
• Open an item
◦ Select the item, and then double-tap anywhere on the screen. If the
item doesn't open, try slowing down or speeding up your tapping speed.
• Increase Granularity
◦ Swipe up then down using a single motion.
• Decrease Granularity
◦ Swipe down then up using a single motion.

◦ Double-tap and hold anywhere on the screen then draw circles

◦ Type a letter of a word, and then slide your finger from the bottom
of screen until you hear a high-pitched tone. Without lifting your
finger, draw circles clockwise to hear a list of suggested words. Draw
circles counterclockwise to cycle backwards through the words. Lift
your finger to select the word.
• Go to the next page or previous page
◦ Swipe left or right with two fingers.
• Scroll up or down
◦ Swipe up or down with two fingers when you can scroll on the screen.
• Scroll right or left
◦ Swipe right or left with two fingers when you can scroll on the screen.
• Adjust a seek control
◦ Seek controls are used to adjust settings such as volume or screen
brightness. To adjust a seek control:
◦ Move VoiceView focus to the control you want to adjust.
◦ Swipe right then left, or left then right, with a finger in a single
motion. Alternatively, double-tap and hold, and then slide a finger to
adjust the control.
• View additional information on an item
◦ Double-tap on the item and hold for one second. After you hear a
tone, swipe to navigate the pop-up menu.
• Unlock the screen
◦ When the screen is locked, swipe up from the bottom of the screen
with two fingers to unlock your device.

I must be doing something wrong because I can turn Voice View on but
can't seem to turn it off unless I go into accessibility, meaning that I
can't just use the two spread fingers toggle.
I don't recall the version number presently installed on my Fire 7, but
it shows that I updated it on July 17 of this year.
I may have screwed up something in the settings, but I find that with
Voice View turned on, the up and down volume buttons near the front
right edge of the 7 have absolutely no effect on the volume of either
the music or the screen reader. Conversely, with Voice View turned off,
those buttons raise and lower volume as one would expect.
One other thing I need to mention is that I get absolutely no output
from the 3.5 mm. headphone jack. I tried using a patch cord first with
a stereo male connector and subsequently with a mono plug just to make
sure I was touching all bases. I also tried phones as well as patch
cords. But it sticks in my mind that the phone jack worked when I first
got the fire 7, albeit the output was rather weak.
If nothing else, I do hope that list members who use Voice View will
test the headphone jack as well as the volume buttons and let me know
their findings.
