I just wanted to report that this morning I opened my Kindle app on my Mac and
was shocked when a book started reading. I think it uses whatever you have set
for a system voice. Cmd-t toggles speech on and off but I haven't figured out
if there are keyboard commands for navigation or not. This btw was the Kindle
app downloaded from Amazon which for some time has been showing various areas
more readable with voiceover but till now there was no way to actually hear the
book itself and voiceover did not, and still does not, navigate the text.
Originally I had used the app from the app store and when I switched to the one
downloaded from Amazon there were differences in accessibility of menus and
storage location of Kindle library. I don't know if this is still the case or
if the two are now the same. At any rate, with the app I now have, on Sierra at
least, speech to text is present.
