I have the fire on fire os something like 5.6.4, the latest update. I bought
last year, around July 4. I had set up a Gmail account at that time, and didn’t
have to give special permissions to Amazon, which is why, when I hadn’t done
anything with it for several months, didn’t change password or anything on any
devices that have my account, it was just really weird that it should say about
a sign in error, and then, once I did sign in, ask for these special
permissions.

I've got two Fire tablets, no problem here. I use my gmail on those
Fire tablets daily. However, now that you have removed the Gmail
account, why not try enabling them again and see what happens?
By the way, which Fire tablet do you have? Not sure, look in settings.
