You need to hold the on off switch to the right for at least 7 seconds.

Okay, I plugged in the power cord and flipped the on/off switched and
released it.
After a few seconds, I then pressed Shift plus Spacebar to turn on
Voice Guide and waited. And waited. And waited.
Nothing.
I could use some help while waiting for a sighted relative to drop by.
