I find I have to bring up the menu and dismiss overlays each time. Your other
option which works much better is, if you have a Kindle that has Alexa enabled
on it, double tap and hold home and say "read" and the name of your book. It
will be read to you continuously without you having to do anything. There have
been several posts by people on this issue also and you can probably look for
them in the archives.
