The usual way is to use an OTG adapter, and to view the drive you will need a
file manager.
I use Total Commander, but there are a few out there that will do the job.
You can find the OTG adapters on Amazon and they are pretty cheap. I have
plugged a powered hub in to my tablet using the OTG adapter, and then plugged
an external hard drive in to the hub, and it worked fine.
A thumb drive should be plenty I use 32gb drives.

Hi Terri. This is off the top of my head, but, if you mean a USB Thumb drive, I
have done so. To use, you need a standard USB to micro USB dongle cable. You
can find on Amazon for $5 bucks or so. I bought a package of three for under
$10 bucks. If you mean a portable hard drive, it will have to be powered by
other than USB. I have not done this. By the way, the dongle can also be used
to attach a regular USB keyboard to your Fire tablet. Whatever the case, just
plug it into the charging port to connect.
I have worked with the Thumb drive using the file manager ESFile Explorer which
is free and found in the Amazon app store.
Take care. William

Hello everyone,
first of all, I apologize if I have asked this before. I just honestly
can't remember.
Anyway, I have a Fire HD, the 10 inch model. I've had it for about 6
months now.
I was wondering, can I possibly connect up an external drive to the tablet?
If so, how would I go about doing this? And would I need any sort of
special cable?
And if I can do this, how do I then view the external drive?
Any help is much appreciated.
Thank you,
Terri
