I ran across the following:

There is actually a workaround if you want to replay a passage you have missed. First, you pause text-to-speech, press back, hit the previous page button, press
shift plus -symbol to start reading again.

Shoshana, when you press the space bar, reading of the book pauses.
However, you are still in text-to-speech mode. While in this mode, you
cannot use the "previous page" or "next page" keys to navigate through a
book. If you turn this mode off via the "shift-symbols" keyboard
shortcut or via the menus available by pressing the "text" key, you can
navigate by turning pages. Does this help?

I'm a bit confused, here. When I'm reading a book, and I have to stop, I
just hit the space bar, which pauses it. Even if I'm away from it long
enough for the Kindle to go into sleep mode, once I hit the slider switch to
wake it up, it goes to my book, and I hit space bar again, and I'm off and
reading. Does what you say apply to, perhaps, starting a book, or going to
the home screen, then back to the book?

no, you don't have to go into the menus to turn it on to read a book. Maybe
I'm calling the symbols key something wrong, but I open a book and press
shift plus what I think is the symbols key, two keys to the left of the
navigation square, and TTS starts up. Every time.

This turns on voice guide but not text to speech. Don't you have to use the

font key, the key right of the space bar to go into a menu where you can
turn on text to speech.

Tim,

I understand there's supposed to be a hotkey to turn TTS on without having
to go into the page preferences menu. According to the podcast I just
listened to, the hotkey is supposed to be symbols and space.

Does this work for you or anyone else reading this? I've tried holding
down
the symbols key and then pressing the space bar as well as hitting the
symbols key followed by the space bar but neither method seems to do the
trick.

Is this info accurate and if so has anyone gotten this to work? Thanks.

Best,

Rick

Yes it does. I use those navigation features a lot. The only time you have
to turn text to speech off is when you're moving back or forward through
pages, but otherwise those navigation features work with speech on. Hope
that helps.
