Along the same line, I found the following in the manual.Text-to-Speech continues playing even if you put your Kindle to sleep by sliding and releasing the power button. Sleeping your Kindle while Text-to-Speech is playing allows you to continue listening but locks all of the keys and buttons so you don’t inadvertently press one.

I'm a bit confused, here. When I'm reading a book, and I have to stop, I just hit the space bar, which pauses it. Even if I'm away from it long enough for the Kindle to go into sleep mode, once I hit the slider switch to wake it up, it goes to my book, and I hit space bar again, and I'm off and reading. Does what you say apply to, perhaps, starting a book, or going to the home screen, then back to the book? Shoshana----- Original Message ----- From: "Sherry Gomes" <sherriola@xxxxxxxxx>

Maybe I'm calling the symbols key something wrong, but I open a book and press shift plus what I think is the symbols key, two keys to the left of the navigation square, and TTS starts up. Every time. -----Original Message----- From: vi-kindle-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:vi-kindle-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Loy Sent: Tuesday, August 07, 2012 3:13 PM To: vi-kindle@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [vi-kindle] Re: Questions about options while reading a Kindle book? This turns on voice guide but not text to speech. Don't you have to use the font key, the key right of the space bar to go into a menu where you can turn on text to speech.----- Original Message ----- From: "Sherry Gomes" <sherriola@xxxxxxxxx>

it's the symbols and shift key I believe. It works every time for me. -----Original Message----- From: vi-kindle-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:vi-kindle-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Rick Alfaro Sent: Tuesday, August 07, 2012 2:20 PM To: vi-kindle@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [vi-kindle] Re: Questions about options while reading a Kindle book? Tim, I understand there's supposed to be a hotkey to turn TTS on without having to go into the page preferences menu. According to the podcast I just listened to, the hotkey is supposed to be symbols and space. Does this work for you or anyone else reading this? I've tried holding down the symbols key and then pressing the space bar as well as hitting the symbols key followed by the space bar but neither method seems to do the trick. Is this info accurate and if so has anyone gotten this to work? Thanks. Yes it does. I use those navigation features a lot. The only time you have to turn text to speech off is when you're moving back or forward through pages, but otherwise those navigation features work with speech on. Hope that helps.
