no, you don't have to go into the menus to turn it on to read a book. Maybe
I'm calling the symbols key something wrong, but I open a book and press
shift plus what I think is the symbols key, two keys to the left of the
navigation square, and TTS starts up. Every time.

This turns on voice guide  but not text to speech. Don't you have to use the

font key, the key right of the space bar to go into a menu where you can 
turn on text to speech.
