Codex does indeed work. Unfortunately, you need an older version of the Kindle
app on your PC for it to successfully convert Kindle books into other formats.
However, an older version of the app is available on the Codex Web site. When
you install it the first thing to do is to go into the app's settings and set
it to not update. Otherwise, it will update to the current version, which then
stops Codex from working.

while we are on the topic of kindle books, is there a tutorial or even some
good instructions on reading kindle books on the iPhone. I can go to a
particular page by number, but can't back up a page or two if I need to
reread them. The finger rotation only allows for words, lines, etc, not for
pages. Also I would like not to have to reread the first page I start on
with the two finger double tap. It is fortunate that I don't get many kindle
books or the fire would become tempting. Since it doesn't play bookshare, or
I don't think it does, I can hold off for a while. My stream and my iPhone
do very well for bookshare and bard.

somehow I jumped to about the middle of the book and now can't find
where I even did that and would have no idea how to jump back to the
beginning or to find the lesson I am wanting.
so i would appreciate any help so i could learn how to move from section
to section without going a page at a time, etc.
