Hmm. I know all about email headers. I've even written php mail
programs. However, I've never had a problem with group messages on
this list using the procedure I described. JMHO.

That has nothing to do with it. As I stated there's information in the
message headers that associates the new message with the hijacked one
which becomes a problem if one is dealingh with grouped messages or
reading messages on the site.
