HI Shoshana.

To my knowledge there is no way of knowing when the fire is going to do an
update.  Possible one disadvantage of having it plugged in constantly is
that the fire updates only when it is plugged in.  Therefore if you made the
habbit of plugging it in at night when you're going to sleep (unless of
course it needs charging) you should not experience what you did this
afternoon.

In terms of registering your fire tablet, go to the home screen and swipe
down from the top with 2 fingers to access the quick settings screen.  Swipe
right with 1 finger until you hear settings and double tap with one finger.
Swipe right again until you hear my account and double tap with 1 finger.
Swipe right until you hear register button and double tap with one finger.
Then input your amazon email address and password and double tab on the
register button.  You should be done.

One final question (for today, anyway).  I have both an Amazon and a Google
account, and I bought my Fire from Laz, so I expect I need to register it
with Amazon.  So, should I register it first with Amazon ...and how do I get
to the screen to do that? And then Google?  BTW, I had a bit of an unnerving
experience today.  I thought I'd turned power off, and was doing something
entirely different.  I happened to glance down at my Fire, and saw the FIRE
logo in orange letters against the black background (and yes, I've got high
contrast and huge fonts, LOL) and couldn't get it to respond.  Then I
noticed some white writing underneath the Fire and put my reading glasses on
and saw that it was getting a system update.  Things is, there were no
tones, no way of knowing that it was updating nonvisually, and my first
thought was that it might be really scary for a totally blind person who
can't see the screen.  Is there a way to get a unique tone when the Fire is
going to update itself?
