Does Amazon even have an ereader now that has audio output since the Kindle 3/Keyboard has been discontinued? Because if they don't, and their current lineup of products that they're getting ready to release in the fall doesn't support audio, then you're looking at at least a year out before you have anything you could use if they're forced to comply with the accessibility standards set forth by Obama. Whether people like it or not, the easiest way to approach this is the apps. The longer people push the hardware thing with these companies more and more entrenched In their position they are going to get. You're telling them they need to change their products not only to make them accessible, but also so people in the blind community don't have to change in how they do things. I hate to disappoint people, but accessibility is the only thing these companies are currently obligated to provide you. If a blind student walks into a college classroom and they hand him or her an iPad mini or a fifth-generation iPod touch with the Kindle for IOS app on it instead of the $69 Kindle 5, then hey what's the problem. You could also give that student a netbook with the Kindle for PC app on it, which is almost featured for featured identical to the Kindle 5. The people who are uncomfortable with the iOS devices touchscreens need to get comfortable with them because that's is the only way that we are going to end up with accessible devices In the first place and devices that are updated on regular basis in the second place. It's not the end of the world, but yes this petition definitely needs to be challenged simply because if we give these corporations an inch on accessibility they'll take a mile. However, technically, it's not an issue for us because of the accessible Kindle app for iOS devices and PCs. The Nook app is also accessible, so that just leaves Sony and kobo to deal with. I don't understand why people are so fixated on the hardware, it's the content that's important, not the hardware. If people are going to challenge this, then do it in a way that works for us, and at the same time, makes them feel like they won as well. Tell them that they can have their hardware, but they have to provide us with a matched feature for feature alternative in the form of apps. The benefit to everyone here is that absent fluid they can continue to develop on them until the end of time hardware when it changes there's a whole lot that goes into it and they're not gonna sit around and hang on to something because it's accessible when it is clearly outdated there's no incentive for them On Aug 9, 2013, at 3:08 PM, Christopher Hawthorne Moss <christopherhmoss@xxxxxxxxx> wrote: http://www.wirelessweek.com/news/2013/08/amazon-sony-ask-fcc-waive-e-readers-handicap-accessibility-rules Exempting ereaders from accessibility. -- Cordially, Christopher Hawthorne Moss ("Kit") christopherhmoss@xxxxxxxxx That's All I Read/Kit Moss Reviews at http://kitmossreviews.blogspot.com Our Story: GLBTQ Historical Fiction at www.glbtbookshelf.com My books: www.shield-wall.com WHERE MY LOVE LIES DREAMING by Christopher Hawthorne Moss http://www.dreamspinnerpress.com/store/product_info.php?products_id=4126 When the Civil War began, it split more than just brothers...
