Apparently, one must first turn the unit on, wait for the beep or other
musical-sounding greeting, then press and hold the power button a second
time, and then and only then, place two fingers on the screen and await
further instructions. Apparently this is the gospel according to Peter Korn.

I have a Fire HD 8 I got from Amazon directly, no issues with the two-finger hold gesture.
I'm not necessarily sure what else could have happened, no idea sadly.

Subject: [vi-kindle] A cautionary tale
A friend just bought a Kindle 8" Fire HD and could not get VoiceView
started in the usual hold-two-fingers-on-screen-during-power-up manner.
Has this feature been disabled in this year's model possibly? Could
this be a sign that the purchased unit was a re-sell, open-box, or
refurbished unit? The owner did get VV running, but it required external
sighted assistance. Disconcerting.
