Jackie, it seems that the reward in this case is getting to see the people at your door. There are some things you can do especially if you can get the cooperation of anyone coming to your door. That is sometimes hard, especially if it is ungodly hot, cold, raining etc. Before you ever open the door, have your dog sit, stand, or whatever you want her to do when people come in. When seh does, c/t. Slowly begin opening door. The instant she breaks out of the behavior such as sit stay, etc, close the door. Keep repeating. Eventually you will be able to open the door and let frient come in. As you are teaching, you will most likely need to break down the behavior. For instance, if she is able to do a sit stay till you get the door quarter way open, at first then let friend come in. As she gets the idea, you can increase till you have door open. As for jumping, I have had friends simply turn their back to my dog. When she sits, they can start coming toward her. But, as soon as she breaks out of that behavior, have your friend turn back to dog. Again, you will most likely need to break behavior in to small steps. You can still use the clicker and treat, but keep in mind that the real reward in this case, is most likely the person visiting. Hope that makes sense. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jackie Rumble" <jackie.rumble@xxxxxxxxx> To: <vi-clicker-trainers@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Tuesday, July 15, 2008 5:23 PM Subject: (VICT) how do I teach my dog that sitting at the door and not jumping is what I want? Hi guys, well, my dog is a jumper, so how do I reinforce the sit when people come in my house? her tail will start then she just can't contain herself? Do I C and T as she is sitting there so she understands that this is the behaviour that I like? How do I eventually fade out the C and T?
