Hey kitty, GEB now uses the GL in their training, and are more interested in more positive methods. Smile. Shelley L. Rhodes B.S. When I was trained with my first guide dog in 2000, my school, geb, was not doing anything with positive training. Leash corrections were the "in thing". It went against the grain of how I ever interacted with a dog, and seemed counter intuitive to some of my educational principles. Mine were never effective as well. My dog was quick to pick up on that fact. After she showed me what a wild child she could be when we visited the vet without my trainer, I had to find another way cuz I was not going to give her back to the school. Her guiding was excellent, so was mainly dealing with behavioral issues. My vet hooked me up with a certified animal behaviorst and dog trainer. Was so happy to discover that her approach to dogs was what I had basically been doing all my life. She also showed me the gl (gentle leader) which is my tool of choice. Hopefully, when the time comes for teh next dog, I won't have to hastle re leash corrections and will get the positive training. ----- Original Message ----- From: "dlshotwell2" <dlshotwell2@xxxxxxxxxxx> To: <vi-clicker-trainers@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Thursday, March 22, 2007 8:20 AM Subject: (VICT) Re: Clicker Training at GDB >>Dian, couldn't agree with you more. R u an alumni of gdb? I understand that they still do use leash corrections. Do you know if that is still true?< Hi Kitty, No, I am not an alumni. My interest stems from assistance dog teaching passion and my mothers blindness as well as involvement with members of Golden Paw ADC members. I am a strong advocate for positive reinforcement teaching especially in assistance dog teaching. I have a number of puppy raisers from TSE in the local chapter of Golden Paw ADC and have high hopes of them moving further from aversives. I understand that the example of GDB has been quite an example and that TSE is now working on incorporating some of this into their program...this is third hand information... but I am excited by the prospect. The cross over process can be just that...a process. I did speak with the trainer about the fact that there are still conversions in the works. The implementation and teaching of the puppy homes is a major step and still in the development stages...at the time I spoke to them. But this is in the planning. I too am a cross over trainer of almost thirty years... I still attach the leash to my wheelchair or belt to avoid the muscle trained reflex of the popping of the leash. They are innovators and will move into this process as fully as possible I am sure. Their courage and dedication they have shown to date has left me with this belief. I was told they will be adding more information to their website in the near future and I look forward to seeing that.
