This isn't a particularly new idea actually. For example, the FreeBSD 
handbook sits in CVS and is made up of a load of SGML files. They then build 
HTML files that go into the distribution and website, but they've also used 
them to help a typesetter produce a published version of the Handbook. It's 
a great example of multiple abstractions from a common source.
