Another possible outcome of the county listing is to share locations to
visit while in specific counties. We have a few regional listserves
where we can pick up some ideas. However, many areas of the state get
very little coverage.

While trout fishing with my son in Giles County recently, we found
several locations that I recommend:

Stony Creek off of Rt. 460 near Pembroke is one that I highly recommend.
We heard a Ruffed Grouse drumming while we were fishing. The stream has
approximately 7 miles of easy access fishing (plus birdwatching,
photography, etc.) right along the roadway. There are also some trails
which head off away from the stream that we did not explore. The
Appalachian Trail also crosses the creek further up the mountain, but we
did not go that far.

Dismal Creek off of Rt. 606 at the Giles Co./ Bland Co. line is another
nice location for exploration. The Dismal Creek access is less than a
mile from Rt. 42. This area is more remote and has less traffic than the
Stony Creek area. The Appalachian Trail also runs parallel to this creek,
but on the opposite side of the road to the fishing areas.

Anytime while visiting Giles County, it is worthwhile to run up to
Mountain Lake to see what is around. During my last visit, I found two
Red-breasted Mergansers and a Pied-billed Grebe on the lake. The trails
in the Mountain Lake area are also excellent for birding.

I would appreciate seeing recommendations for other areas around the
state.

Larry
