Subject: [va-richmond-general] DGAP MAPS Season 12 opener...or why we get up at
We had a great turn out of MAPS' volunteers and a terrific showing of birds in
the nets for our MAPS' season opener.
Nets opened a half hour before a stunning sunrise...A lively dawn chorus gave
us anticipation for a fruitful day.
True to form our first catch of the day was a precious Northern Cardinal...our
trademark bird, followed by a Prothonotary warbler.
Cardinals, Prothonotary's, Carolina Wrens and mosquitioes were the pattern for
the first few runs.
The cork popped when a handsome adult Brown Thrasher and youngster were caught.
Lots of our most wanted birds stayed high atop the canopy, including Red-eyed
Vireo...a bird who's numbers have dropped off dramatically in our neck of the
woods over the past years. We were very happy to at least hear the little
varmint.
Heading out on a net run. a Fish Crow was booking it with a "red and yellow"
bird on his tail. Well we caught those red & yellow birds. Two Summer Tanagers,
both second year (SY) birds giving many "oohs and ahhh's" with their awesome
molt limits. The Prothonotary's continued rolling in, many already banded from
the ongoing Prothonotary survey. The icing in the cake was a Great-crested
Flycatcher that "wheeeped" on in to our data base.
A fun and energetic crew and great birds made the sighs of the 3:30 alarm clock
fade away into the mist of the nets.....
Tally for the day was 30 birds. Here's the alpha codes...you can use your
holiday time to figure them out ;)
