I think you're right about the signs of territorialism. I still see them chasing vultures, although not as often. The vultures steal their leftovers too, which is obviously aggravating. I've witnessed vultures sitting on the building signs where the falcons had been. It's an awkward place for a vulture (as opposed to the top of the building) so they must be finding some goodies there. It has been quite a while since I've seen vultures on the signs, though. I have seen the falcons sitting on that Bank of America sign. And the 2nd Wednesday walk group found one there last week. These four buildings -- SunTrust, Dominion, Riverfront, & Bank of America -- seem to be their favorites. Sometimes they'll eat on the First Union building, but they don't perch there very often. Well, we shall keep a lookout for chicks in the Spring! I have been seeing both on a daily basis for several weeks now, looking west toward the SunTrust and Dominion Buildings from Bank of America, while earlier I would see them on a less frequent basis. I am seeing a lot of movement in the falcons, with one regular stop being over my head, apparently on the Bank of America sign. Another regular stop is the east side SunTrust sign. By analogy, I am comparing their activity in my mind to neighborhood Mocks, who go from specific post to post. I noticed in early November that they lost their tolerance for the vultures, and in November and December witnessed quite a number of aerial confrontations. The black and turkey vultures that used to hang out at SunTrust in numbers disappeared completely, and remain missing. I do not know if the vultures that used to hang out at the Hunton dinning room patio area have been run off as well. I had wondered if I was seeing signs of territorialism leading up to nesting. -----Original Message----- From: Mary Davis [mailto:mad_anthony@xxxxxxx] Sent: Thursday, February 21, 2002 6:35 PM To: va-richmond-general@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [va-richmond-general] nest box on Dominion building I just got word today that a nest box has been placed in one of the vents on the east side of the Dominion building by the Center for Conservation Biology at William & Mary. We're hoping the peregrine falcon pair will find it and settle in for the spring. They have been seen flying into the vents and food caches were discovered in the one where the box was placed. The last time I saw the pair together was last Thursday, but I've seen one falcon at least once a day since then. We'll keep our fingers crossed! Mary Davis You are subscribed to VA-Richmond-General.
