Jethro Runco, the regular bander at Kiptopeke, is banding this spring for
CVWO (Coastal Virginia Wildlife Observatory) at 1st Landing State Park
(formerly Seashore Sate Park), every day through late May. This morning he
caught a prothonotary warbler on the 7:30 net run. Geez, I'd better get the
last of the new nest boxes up at Dutch Gap ASAP! For anyone interested in
visiting the 1st Landing Station, Jethro would be glad to see you. The
station is located at the intersection of the Long Creek and White Hill Oak
trails, about a 35 minute walk in from the Visitor's Center by way of the
Kingfisher connecting trail off the main Cape Henry trail. A really
beautiful setting in among the Spanish moss. Forested dunes, bald cypress
swamp, tidal marsh and a freshwater lake all meet at that location.
