Many thanks to Robert and James McLemore for guiding Mike and me out to
where the woodcocks were the last time they reported them. It was a much
better viewing situation than the one I found myself in on the CCC Trail
recently. Bigger sky instead of just the roadway, so you could see more of
their antics. No clue how many there were-at least a dozen or more,
including several pairs chasing each other not too far from our heads and a
number of them landing fairly close on the mowed trails. There seems to be
more open space in that part of the park, which could explain why we saw and
heard nothing on the CCC Trail when we checked it out before heading home.
One of the local barred owls hooted in the distance. With good company and
a thoroughly charming target bird it just doesn't get any better! If others
want to go you can probably get one of us to accompany you. Robert's
directions are very good and descriptive if you get them. The park map just
doesn't quite measure up!
