Ben's note forgot to mention one of the funniest sightings of the day. He and Betsy discovered a raccoon precariously hanging onto some branches in a small tree in the middle of the wetlands... with a Goose guarding the base of the tree. That was around Noon. At 6pm, the goose was still on guard duty at the base of the tree and the raccoon was still trying to hang on. One would guess that the raccoon had tried to raid the gooses nest for eggs and ended up retreating up the tree when attacked by the goose. I wonder if he made it back down the tree overnight. The location: From the 2nd observation platform look slightly left and out about 60 yards. (wild guess on the distance). Other interesting birds observed during the day included: Louisiana Waterthrushes at Rockwood County Park and Pocahontas State Park. Royal Terns at Hopewell (Appomatox River and City Point) and at a couple of places along the James River, including from the river bluffs at Henricus.
