Richmond Bird Enthusiasts,
Happy new year. It is time to Protect Chesapeake Bay Osprey and other water
birds from malnutrition due to the depleted levels of Atlantic Menhaden as
explained by Zachary Greenberg at a Richmond Audubon meeting last year. The
Marine Stewardship Council should not certify this fish as sustainable when the
Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Council made catch recommendations of fifty
one thousand metric tonnes that were ignored by the Virginia General Assembly
last year.
"Recent surveys reveal a decade-long decline of menhaden in the Bay, causing
concern as the small, oily fish is a crucial link in the Chesapeake food
chain...
Striped bass and bluefish, as well as whales, dolphins, and birds all depend on
the menhaden.
-- CBF
"In 1997, the World Wildlife Fund joined with the conglomerate Unilever to
create an independent certification group for seafood, the Marine Stewardship
Council. ...
However, some environmental organizations suggest that MSC's ability to ensure
sustainability has not kept pace with its expansion. On Thursday, WWF joined
others in calling for reform at MSC,... Greenpeace, the Environmental Justice
Foundation and others published a more strongly-worded statement in late
January, alleging that MSC is "allowing fisheries with widely unacceptable
impacts to be certified."
