8 hardy souls turned out this morning for a 7:30 walk at the VCU Rice Center. The original trip to Presquile NWR was canceled due to the weather-who would have thought that would happen in April?

We started out in full winter apparel with a steady, beautiful snow fall clinging to all the trees. Fog obscured the view of the Benjamin Harrison Bridge and many of us were thinking that maybe those hand warmers would have been a good idea.

The morning started with a chorus of La.Waterthrush, Yellow-throated warblers and Blue-grey Gnatcatchers.  Between the snow flakes we watched an interesting aerial display of Osprey and Bald Eagle over the pond with a Great Blue Heron looking on. We were teased with the sun making brief breaks in the clouds and pieces of blue sky showing. A cute look at a Red-headed Woodpecker peeking from a cavity was seen by all. Good to hear the call of an Ovenbird. A full e-bird listing should be coming out later today from another trip participant. Just wanted to thank all who decided not to hit the snooze button today-it was a great morning. As a bonus we all got a look at the cyclists competing in the US Open Cycling Championship as they sped down Route 5.
