Rain Garden Symposium: a Tri-Refresher Program

Sign up now for an information-packed symposium on August 20 and 21 in
Charlottesville called "Conservation Through Rain Gardens." The workshop
has been planned as part of an annual Landscape Design Refresher Program
of the Virginia Federation of Garden Clubs, Inc. Co-sponsors include
the Virginia Department of Forestry and the USDA Forest Service's Potomac
Watershed Grant.

On the first day, speakers from the Dept. of Forestry, Dept. of
Conservation and Recreation, and Dept. of Game & Inland Fisheries will
cover the benefits of rain gardens and how to construct them. Lardner
and Klein Landscape Architects will also be on hand to cover landscape
design issues and to help answer questions during a plant selection work
session. On the second day, participants will install a rain garden and
then go on a case study tour.

A rain garden is not a water garden. It is a constructed, shallow
depression designed to capture stormwater runoff and to filter any
pollutants that the runoff may carry. The plants, soil and mulch of the
rain garden help to improve the water quality that is so important to our
streams, rivers, and the Chesapeake Bay. [To see a picture of a rain
garden and learn more about them, visit the Dept. of Forestry's web site
at www.dof.state.va.us Under "forest management," click on "water
quality" and then click on "rain gardens."]

The Rain Garden Symposium will be held at the Department of Forestry's
headquarters at the Fontaine Avenue Research Park in Charlottesville. An
advance registration of $80--which includes two lunches--is required by
August 15. If you have questions about the program, please contact
Janice Doyle at (434) 979-9900 or e-mail BDoyle7@xxxxxxx
