I have ordered a waterproof notebook for getting out on rainy days and not
losing data at www.riteintherain.com.  Also this for not losing the
notebook!  http://www.bigpockets.com/   Anybody else have favorite birding
gear?

I had written off yesterday and the next couple of days but you are
inspiring me to continue my survey today despite the rain!

Lewis, I think you are spot on.  I have had FOS birds for the past three
days at Bryan Park in the city of Richmond.  Today, the new birds were
scarlet tanager, northern waterthrush, wood thrush, black-throated blue
warbler, spotted sandpiper, great-crested flycatcher, and blue grosbeak.
Yesterday, it was common yellow-throat, yellow warbler, hooded warbler,
swamp sparrow, broadwing hawk, and white-eyed vireo.  Thursday, it was black
and white warbler, parula warbler, indigo bunting, yellow-throated vireo and
solitary sandpiper.

The rain may be heavy at times, but there are always breaks where you can
sneak at peak.

Bob Beard, Richmond

Things are starting to heat up. I ran into Arun Bose down at Reedy Creek
this morning, and between the two of us, we found 11 warbler species, 10 in
the park (in taxonomic order: Blue-winged, Black-and-white, Prothonotary,
Common Yellowthroat, American Redstart, Northern Parula, Yellow, Palm,
Yellow-rumped,Yellow-throated, Black-throated Green), and Black-throated
Blue that Arun had at his house before he came out. A Prothonotary pair has
chosen a snag right by the trail just east (downstream) of the clearing with
the view of the river for their nest site this year. Other arrivals or
passage migrants seen or heard today included Spotted Sandpiper, Solitary
Sandpiper, Greater Yellowlegs, Yellow-billed Cuckoo, Great Crested
Flycatcher, Eastern Kingbird, Gray Catbird, House Wren, Orchard Oriole
(Reedy Creek) and Baltimore Oriole (42nd St Parking lot).

It was gray and occasionally drizzly, but not too bad this morning. These
sorts of days seem to be pretty good for birding during migration, as the
wet weather tends to make the migrants stay put wherever the rain catches
them.

Here's a link to my complete checklist. Don't let the rain deter you - get
on out there!
