*Gone to the Birds 2012 Festival* The Gone to the Birds 2012 Festival will be held on Saturday, August 4 at the 17th Street Farmers’ Market, Shockoe Bottom, from 6 pm-9 pm. Come watch thousands of Purple Martins as they rush to roost before a Peregrine Falcon finds them! This migratory roost site is a temporary home for birds gathering from local counties and Canada before they begin their 5,000 mile journey to the Amazon basin. The new website is www.gonetothebirds*rva*.com<http://www.gonetothebirdsrva.com/>! Purple Martins are now at Shockoe Bottom arriving every night one hour before sunset until the end of August. Their numbers will increase nightly, peaking usually around the first week in August. On Wednesday, June 27, almost 2,000 birds were counted. Members of the Purple Martin Conservation Association will have educational exhibits on nesting Martins. T-shirts with “Gone to the Birds” will be on sale. Richmond Audubon Society members will answer questions about birds and local birding spots. The Department of Game and Inland Fisheries will showcase the wildlife diversity of Virginia and highlight opportunities for wildlife watching. The Virginia Society of Ornithology will answer questions about where to find rare birds throughout Virginia. DeLuca Gelato will serve several flavors of Italian ice cream for a nominal fee. Virginia Master Naturalists will circulate and answer questions about birds, wildlife and habitat improvement. A wandering minstrel will provide music. The July 19th issue of *Henrico* *Citizen* newspaper will contain an insert about Shockoe Bottom businesses offering special deals or discounts for visitors from July 19 to August 30.
