It was an excellent day for the opening of Richmond Audubon's Monitoring Avian Productivity and Survivorship (MAPS) station at the Powhanat Wildlife Management Area. The session was well-attended by RAS volunteers and other interested visitors. The morning opened with great excitement at the capture and banding of two pileated woodpeckers, a first for the station. In all we processed 31 birds: 24 newly banded and 7 returns from previous years. A returned male Kentucky Warbler in breeding condition was among the last birds captured in the day. List for today: white-eyed vireo (WEVI) 4 : includes one return from 2003 (an adult then, making it 5+ years old) red-eyed vireo (REVI) 4 pine warbler (PIWA) 1 black and white warbler (BAWW) 1 prairie warbler (PRAW) 1 common yellowthroat (COYE) 1 hooded warbler 1, a return from 2006 yellow-breasted chat 1, a return from 2006 Kentucky warbler (KEWA) 1 eastern wood pewee (EAWP) 1 American Goldfinch (AMGO) 2 Acadian Flycatcher (ACFL) 1 indigo bunting (INBU) 6 : includes two returns from 2006 northern cardinal (NOCA) 3, includes one return from 2004 eastern tufted titmouse 1 (ETTI), a return from 2004 pileated woodpecker (PIWO) 2 (an adult male and a juvenile female, likely his daughter) Best, Bob Reilly
