Mr. Sergio Harding, a Nongame Bird Conservation Biologist with the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, contacted me about recruiting Coastals for help with the following survey.

If interested, you and the birder would choose the day and the section of river to paddle. Go to the web site link below for more information and to sign up.

Signed,
Raymond

Paddlers wanted for breeding bird surveys

The Virginia Society of Ornithology and the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries are looking for your help in conducting breeding bird surveys this June. The surveys are targeted at documenting breeding birds in forested riparian areas along various Coastal Plain and Piedmont river segments in Virginia. The surveys will take place by canoe and kayak in order to maximize access to otherwise inaccessible areas. As such, they are unique in being one of only a handful of landbird surveys in the country to be conducted by paddling along waterways.

We are seeking experienced paddlers to match up with experienced birders along individual survey routes. Each route will be surveyed once during the month of June starting in the early morning (official sunrise). Scheduling of surveys within this time period is flexible and is left up to you. Please visit http://fredvso.umwblogs.org for detailed information on the surveys and survey routes and to sign up.
