The Powhatan Wildlife Management Area MAPS banding station, currently operated by Rita Shultz, launched it's 11th season last Sunday. Dawn broke with cool temperatures and Whip-poor-wills calling under a (slightly) waning gibbous moon. Highlights of the day included an unexpected second-year female Chestnut-sided Warbler, as well as a Yellow-throated Vireo. The nets were closed under fabulous blue skies, accompanied by the otherworldly calls of 17-year cicadas. Thirty-two birds, representing 17 species, were netted. Here's the list, and attached are a few pictures from the day. American Redstart 1 Black and White Warbler 2 Chestnut-sided Warbler 1 Northern Parula 2 Hooded Warbler 3 (1 recap) Acadian Flycatcher 4 White-eyed Vireo 1 Eastern Wood-Pewee 1 Louisiana Waterthrush 2 (1 recap) Kentucky Warbler 1 Red-eyed Vireo 1 Yellow-throated Vireo 1 Summer Tanager 1 Northern Cardinal 7 (3 recaps) Carolina Wren 2 Swainson's Thrush 1 Ruby-throated Hummingbird 1 (unbanded) Kim Cook Powhatan, VA
