All,
A fellow Audubon member asked me just this week, "Are you guys banding this
year?" Why, you betcha!  Apologies for the late post...just catching up after a
busy few weeks, and multiple technical difficulties with email.
Our 2015 MAPS banding season at Powhatan Wildlife Management Area is well under
way, with session 3 coming up this weekend. We had some challenges getting our
site up and running this year, as beavers moved into the area and have caused
quite a bit of flooding.  Wading knee-deep through water in the wee hours with
a headlamp to set up nets is a riot!  We were fortunate to have pleasant
temperatures and some interesting birds for the first two sessions, though it
was perhaps a bit breezier than is ideal for netting. The prize for the most
interesting non-avian find goes to Andrea Conkle, who spotted a fabulous
Pipevine Swallowtail caterpillar (pictured) while extracting a bird from the
net.
Below are the species netted for sessions 1 and 2, along with a few pictures ~
