Abby Walter and I took to 42nd St again this morning for our biggest haul
yet this year. We ended up with over 70 species!
We parked at the trailhead on Riverside just east of the main 42nd St
parking lot. We took the trail between the two parking areas down just
below the road to find a taciturn VEERY. We then headed just west of the
main parking area (around where the Kentucky was the other day) to find
singing SWAINSON'S and HERMIT THRUSHES, and the same BLUE-WINGED WARBLER
from the past few days (it has a unique song, not the typical one, and I
make sure to sight-confirm all singing Vermivora to make sure they aren't
obvious hybrids).
For the second half of the walk, we moved to Reedy Creek and headed toward
Belle Isle. We took the trail to the left before the rocks and crossed the
small dam out to the "secret" islands to find two SPOTTED SANDPIPERS on a
rock out on the river. On our way back toward the main trail, just before
the bridge, we saw two more Blue-wings, a singing ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER,
and a gorgeous male ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK, and heard our first WARBLING
VIREO of the year. Back towards the Reedy Creek parking lot we heard a
NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH in the small wetland across the railroad tracks from
the headquarters.
Quite a productive morning. Full list below, as always.
