Hello,
It's been a sloooow NSWO season for us in Powhatan. We have been open for 4
nights since Halloween. Last night under perfect conditions with cold temps, no
wind and a moonless sky we were happy to finally net an 89 gram ASY (after
second year) female.
These little owls are quite nomadic and have been dancing all around the
country from NY, NJ, MA,MD, OK, AK, AR, PA, IN, KY. They are migrating from
points north mainly Canada, which so far has had some record high numbers. Last
year at this time we had over 30 owls.In 2012 we were over 100 at this date.
Trying to remember this is still data...but geesh!
The night sky is spectacular and we were able to catch a glimpse of one of the
Taurid meteors. The woods have been silent except for what sounded like a
distant coyote with two lone howls.
Hoping for more success and proposing the owls have just stalled out waiting
for the push of this cold air.
