I had two male Rose-breasted Grosbeaks on my feeder this morning in Westover
Hills. Beautiful!
Plus, a lot of others are coming or stopping by. House Wrens are checking out a
little bird house. Cat birds and Great Created Flycatchers are calling in the
woods. I still have some White-throated Sparrows. Several Warbler species are
around as well. I have a small flock of Yellow-rumped Warblers (5-6) and I have
heard what sounded like a Chestnut-sided and a Northern Parula but didn't see
them.
Early one morning this week we saw a Barred Owl being chased by a pack of
crows. There seem to be a lot of crows chasing larger birds. I almost got hit
in my car by a vulture being chased.
I also saw an interesting display by a Red-tailed hawk last week. It was flying
around fairly low and calling. Then it would put out its "landing gear" (it's
legs straight out) and land in a tree. Not much later it would be back up in
the air and repeat the process again and again. Is this mating behavior? I only
saw the one bird.
Blessings,
Martha
