We had sixteen enthusiastic bird and/or beer lovers for Saturday's bird walk at
Lickinghole Creek Craft Brewery in Goochland County. It was a mostly overcast
and somewhat muggy day, but we found some good birds, starting with Wild
Turkey, Killdeer, Kingbirds and Grasshopper Sparrows giving good looks from the
entrance road and parking area. As we walked to road down to the pond, we had a
flyover by three Eastern Meadowlarks giving their interaction calls. We also
had singing Yellow-throated Vireos and Prairie Warblers, and finally managed to
get a look at the Indigo Bunting who had been taunting us.
Things were a little dicier once we hit the trails - heavy foliage hid most of
the birds we heard from sight, with the exception of brief looks at a female
Scarlet Tanager who had been giving her "chick-burr" call for some time when a
few of the crew were able to spot her. There was actually no shortage of birds,
just a shortage of good sightlines on the trails. It seemed we had Ovenbirds
singing at each other about every fifty meters or so, and also heard Hooded
Warblers, Northern Parula, Black-and-white Warbler, Common Yellowthroat and
Yellow-breasted Chat. The most visible critter on this part of the walk was a
racoon sleeping up in the crotch of a tree by Little Lickinghole Creek.
A singing Orchard Oriole high in the treetops along the Magic Beaver Pond
greeted us as we trooped back up the hill to the brewery. We ended the day with
45 species
About half of the crew hung around and enjoyed some tasty beer after the walk.
