Hi James River Winter Bird Counters.

Just a "save-the-date" email to let you know of the James Winter Count scheduled for Saturday 14 January 2012. This is our annual bird survey of the James River Park system. The park is broken up into 8 sectors and birders choose (or are assigned to a sector based on need) and record the species of birds seen. Each sector will be assigned a sector leader. Unlike Christmas Bird counts we do not count the numbers of a species. The count typically starts at 7 am and ends at 10-1030 at the home of Mary Arginteanu and Larry Robinson who have opened their home to us for the last 80 years as we warm-up, catch-up and fill up our bellies with our "group provided" brunch. All that is required to participate in this fun activity is a desire to bird, a food and/or beverage contribution to the brunch and at least one suet cake to give Mary to contribute to her RAS kids projects.

The sectors we covered are listed below:

42nd Street
Floodwall
Belle Isle
Byrd Park
Ancarrow's
Wetlands
Pony Pasture
Hugenot Landing

Please contact me off the list serv  of your interest in participating and if you have a preferred sector, or are willing to just be assigned to a sector. More emails to follow, ending with a final email the week before the count to finalize. This is a fun way to start the year, catch up with old friends and meet some new ones.

Thanks for your interest,
Julie Kacmarcik
