Meet some new people-discover uncharted habitat, share your expertise with a developing group of birders and learn about habitat formation at the quarry and best of all-you may see a few birds! Hope to see you there!-Julie K. Saturday, April 9, 2005 -*New Trip* Vulcan Materials, Royal Stone Quarry, Henrico County: This trip will be led by Susan Dudley. Vulcan Materials, Royal Stone Quarry is located approximately three miles north of Broad Street on Pouncey Tract Road. The Vulcan Materials property has been a certified wildlife habitat site since 1992. In the industry of crushing stone it is an important goal to respect and make every effort to work with and enhance the wildlife in the area. Vulcan Materials maintains 18 bird boxes and two butterfly gardens. It also keeps the waterways clear after the busy work of resident beavers. One criterion to meet re-certification was to identify species. Vulcan Materials wants help from the Richmond Audubon Society to assist with the bird species on their location. Many birds have been identified, but with novice experience, the folks at Vulcan are anxious to make the list more complete. Members of RAS are invited to visit on April 9th for a tour of the facility. Vulcan welcomes any suggestions that will ensure the future success of their wildlife program. Meet at the entrance at 8 a.m. Call Julie Kacmarcik with questions at 530-3660. You are subscribed to VA-Richmond-General.
