Eight birders from Richmond Audubon Society spent several hours at the Main Section of James River Park today, starting from the 42nd Street entrance. The official list includes 9 warbler species: Northern Parula, Chestnut-Sided, Black-throated Blue, Yellow-rumped, Yellow-throated, Blackpoll, Black-and-White, American Redstart, and Common Yellowthroat. Other observers reported Blue-winged, Worm-eating, Prothonotary, and Canada as well as Warbling Vireo. Parula and Yellow-rumped were the most numerous. We found both Orioles, two beautiful male Scarlet Tanagers. A single Spotted Sandpiper was sighted from the upstream picnic area. Catbirds were numerous. A couple of White-throated Sparrows were hanging around.
Cool moment of the day: trip leader steps right over a Copperhead making its way across the trail before anyone notices it. Hey, I was look for warblers, not herps! Closely followed by Red-tailed Hawk finding lunch on the tracks near the park headquarters building.
Total, including observations from other birders, is 62. The trip last year on 5/2/09 found 68.
