I was one of the faint-hearted who dropped out of the Powhite Park trip -- my daughter wasn't too keen on being soaking wet. To make up for missing out, I hit the Wetlands yesterday afternoon and walked from 42nd Street down to Belle Isle this morning. Highlights were a pair of American Wigeons in the Wetlands pond and one of the Winter Wrens still hanging out on the main road in. There were also a couple of Pine Warblers singing in the woods between the entrance and the first fork. Today I found a pair of Black Ducks down near the Belle Isle end of the main area and saw four or five Tree Swallows out over the river. There was also a Ring-billed Gull out over the river playing with a small stick. The game consisted of dropping the stick and then retrieving it. A few times, it dropped the stick and caught it in mid air, then, after missing once and letting the stick fall in the water, it played the game several times by dropping the stick in to the water deliberately and fishing it out again. I got a good chuckle out of the scene.
