We had a great morning for the annual Great Backyard Bird Count survey at James
River National Wildlife Refuge - temps above freezing, lots of sunshine and
very little wind for most of the morning. Fourteen people turned out, and found
a total of 36 species. We did well on raptors, with a total of 17 Bald Eagles,
Red-tailed and Red-shouldered Hawks and both vultures. American Black Ducks
were again found on Powell’s Creek. Wood Ducks in the swamp along the entrance
road and a pair of fly-over Mallards at Blair’s Wharf rounded out the ducks
today. We found Red-headed Woodpeckers, but they were difficult to see today.
We missed Hairy Woodpecker, but the other woodpeckers were present. Another
miss was Ruby-crowned Kinglet, usually pretty easy this time of year, and found
only one Golden-crowned Kinglet, ID’ed by it’s call. The complete species list
is given below.
Thanks to everyone who came out this year!
