After a blinding sunrise this morning at least 31 birders set out to do our
annual inventory of 8 sectors of the JRP system.
We were lucky to have almost balmy temps hanging in the high 40's to mid 50's.
Barely a zephyr blew by. Barely a bird blew by...where were the Crows and
Phoebe's and Coots and a lot of other gimme's?
Our species total for the park system was 67. Arun Bose pulled out a clutch
Nashville Warbler at the Ship Locks. A Black & White warbler was seen and
photographed at Ancarrow's (I think). Great Horned and Barred Owls were seen at
the Carillon and Wetlands as usual.
"The Hefty Bags" of Belle Isle watched the raging Class 4-5 rapids of
Hollywood and were treated to an aerial jousting between 2 immature Bald
Eagles. One carrying some sort of unidentified prey while the other Eagle
unsuccessfully maneuvered to get a free brunch. It was quite a show!
Always great see old friends, meet new folks and enjoy all the goodies at the
compilation.
Thanks so much to Ben and Betsy Saunders for inviting us to their home.
And, thank you to all who turned out for a fun way to kick off the 2017 birding
activities!
Attaching a few pictures from Belle Isle.
