My feeder is out - not frozen, & red buckeye blossoms are opening a few at a
time here in central Hanover Co. Dinner is served when they arrive!

Thanks Ellison,
I remember watching L'il Sarge (Rufous Hummer) hawking insects on the fly.
Although your gardens may not be sporting a lot of flowers right now, there
are plenty of blooms on trees. If anything you may be doing these arriving
gems a disservice by not supplying them a feeding station in your yard. Put
out your feeders, throw another log on the fire and relax!
Enjoy the birds.

All,
They are well prepared for cold spring days as they arrive in the Mid
Atlantic. When males begin arriving they will feed on flowers if available
(including the "flowers" of some tree species). They also frequent sapsucker
holes to drink sap. Insects are another food item they will regularly take.
And, of course, hummingbird feeders.
For hummers that arrive early the cold weather may be trying but they are
well prepared and there is a reward for risking it. Males on the leading
edge of migration can claim the best territories.

Jim,
Read about torpor. Read about the tenacity of hummingbirds. Having been a
"landlord" of an Allen's and Rufous Hummingbird from Nov-April during 2
season's I have no concern's of the weather impacting their survival.
Perhaps their migration may slow but if they are here they are fine.

Ruby-throated Hummingbirds are quite capable of enduring freezing weather.
If you happen to have one attending a feeder before Saturday night, just
take the feeder in at dark and put it back out before first light. The 1:4
sugar/water solution does not begin to freeze until the temp dips down to
26-27 degrees.

But I am not putting out my feeder until Sunday, because of the freeze
threat. I don’t want the nectar to freeze and ruin the feeder. I wonder if
the freeze will harm the birds. They do fly south in the autumn for a reason.
