beak. Tried a drop of water, but the only response was a vibrating body
with a humming noise. Then a tiny high twitter. Mystery solved but now the
problem of safely letting him go with yellow jackets on his feeder! Hummer
in one hand, I caught the jackets with the other and opened my hand for the
tiny bird to investigate surroundings----boy, was he interested! He soon
zoomed off with lots of energy while another hummer watched. I had thought
that I only had one hummer left! Happy ending. Yes, I squashed the 2
jackets in a wad of paper towels. I feel sort of like a hero!

We're actually seeing more winter records of Ruby-thoated Hummingbirds -
mostly in Tidewater although there is one record from Charlottesville. See

and if you scroll down on the map to North Carolina, there are loads of
records. People are leaving their feeders up later (I keep mine out into
early winter for the possibility of getting one of the wintering western
species) and I think we are seeing more complete reporting as a result.

I suspect the cold rain plus storms - nor'easter & hurricane may have caused
hummers to "shelter in place" with males leaving earlier ahead of the bad
weather. I wouldn't be surprised if, assuming the weather clears & warms as
predicted on Tuesday, most of the females & juv. around don't suddenly
disappear, headed south!
Of the 5 green & white hummers (no red throats) here 2 weeks ago & 3 last
Fri, (9/25), I see only 1 now. That may be 1 at a time, but bird's only at
1 feeder - the biggest one & most sheltered. This little gal is huddling on
the feeder consistently today, leaving only sporadically for short distance
& for just time enough to preen a bit. She's constantly alert, though
fluffed up, and looking around as if "antsy" or maybe wondering if others
are around. When there's a break in the weather, I expect she'll be gone.

F. It may not be unusual to be here this late for Chesterfield but it’s
