How about then putting the wind turbines on the areas that have already been torn up by the coal and strip miners? Sure, wind power has its problems. But other things have their problems, some even worse. If not wind turbines, how do we get energy for the future? We are about to run out of cheap oil - the demand will exceed the supply. So do we invade oil-bearing nations to get the oil? Hydrogen derived from solar power is ideal - but it can't be done yet. There are numerous problems to be solved. Nuclear power is an option. It won't directly kill birds. But there are many problems with nuclear energy. We are going to be running out of natural gas soon, as well. So do we keep burning coal, warming the atmosphere, flooding islands, changing climate, and thus killing birds that can't adapt, and dirtying the air? There are no easy solutions. Stephen Leeb ("The Oil Factor") suggests using wind power to generate electricity instead of coal, and taking the existing coal mines and supply and converting that to oil for our cars and other uses. And, of course, conserving wherever we can. Do any of you have any other answers? Highland County is not the location for a wind farm - and it is highly unlikely that it would provide any real long term advantages to the people of the county. Keep up the good fight Margaret!
