There was a good turnout for the Heron Rookery walk this morning. The high
count for Herons for the day was 60, with lots of nest-building activity. There
were some nests were birds appeared to be sitting on eggs, and still others
where it was possible to observe courtship behavior going on, so all in all, a
good day to be watching the Herons. A pair of Osprey continue to work on the
old nest on the electric transmission tower, and there are still good numbers
of gulls on the river.

The river itself was giving an amazing performance as well, as it crested at
nearly three feet above flood stage just as the walk was beginning. At that
level, the water is about half-way up the pipe, so there was no beach to speak
of, but still plenty of good views from the pipe itself. According to NOAA
(http://water.weather.gov/ahps2/hydrograph.php?wfo=akq&gage=rmdv2) the river
level is declining at this point.

Thanks to Ralph White of the James River Park System and Mary Elfner of the
Virginia Important Bird Area Program for their insightful commentary today. If
you can't make it down to the river to check the rookery out in person, be sure
to visit the web site developed by the Virginia IBA program and Dominion
Resources, which you can find two ways:
