Several nice folks on this list helped me identify the hermit thrush that appeared here in the January snow. He has become one of the most loyal of my feeder birds, out every morning waiting on the deck railing for me to put out the seed, and enjoying sunflower chips and suet all day. Thanks for the info on the hot pepper suet! A couple of weeks ago we found one on our deck dead on the snow. We've always had fruit suet and peanut butter out for the birds as well as sunflower and safflower seeds. Last week Linda and I travelled to Herndon to see the varied thrush while there were told about the hot pepper suet that Steve Bershader uses and how much certain birds like it. We bought several cakes of it earlier this week and put 1 out on Wednesday. Yesterday it was visited by a hermit thrush and this morning it has been back to the suet several times, even pursuing suet that's dropped to the ground. As I said above, these are the first known sightings of hermit thrushes in our yard, more specifically the feeders, which is mostly open. We do have a couple of areas that are brushy and more secluded which we've seen it fly back to. If anyone is interested in this type of suet it is Hot Pepper Delight and is available at Home Depot (probably elsewhere too). Another great advantage of this suet is that squirrels won't eat it. They may try it but apparently can't tolerate the spiciness of it on their faces. Bob and Linda Cole 605 Maple St Ashland, va 23005
