The field trip at Henricus / Dutch Gap today (March 3) was attended by 6 RAS members, one young future RAS member, and one out of town guest (NAS member who got our website from a web search) from Michigan. The weather was cool and a slight but steady rain persisted. Nevertheless, 51 species were recorded. A detour to the cyprus stand for pictures as part of a class project produced some interesting wildlife and the first look at this area of the park for some people. Mostly the regulars were seen, but there were some highlights: Pied-billed Grebes, 2 red-shouldered hawk nests with young in the Henricus area, a Cooper's Hawk over the cyprus stand, E. Towhees (heard), Fish Crows (heard), YB sapsuckers, Brown Thrasher, kingfisher flying over the lagoon, BG gnatcatchers; Tree, Rough-wing, and Barn Swallows; several Killdeer, great looks at Palm Warblers near marker 8, Yellow-throated Warblers around the lagoon, Osprey with properly aligned fish, Black & White Warbler, Barred Owl, Swamp Sparrow, and an immature Bald Eagle. Winter waterfowl remaining were limited to Ring-neck Ducks. Several pairs of Wood Ducks were seen; no American Coots or Northern Shovelers. There were no Black Vultures, even at the boat ramp, and only one TV. Lots of slugs were on the road (trail), and several bird species were enjoying their company. We decided to leave them alone, and just enjoyed being there. Linda & Al Warfield You are subscribed to VA-Richmond-General.
