Clean Water from the Dragon Run and Piankatank River to Bethel Beach means lots
of fish for the Red-throated Loons and bent mussels living on oyster beds for
the Surf Scooters. These food species will die if high nutrient runnoff and
wastewater creates Algea Blooms and dead zones in the Bay. This is one reason
that the Chesapeake TMDL needs enforcement to protect these birds.
From Creek to Bay:
On Wednesday, July 13, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a terrible
amendment offered by Congressmen Bob Goodlatte (R-VA) and Glenn “GT” Thompson
(R-PA). The amendment, if it becomes law, would prevent EPA from imposing
“backstop” actions on states that were falling behind on implementing their own
Watershed Implementation Plans – effectively taking away EPA’s primary
enforcement tool for pushing the Chesapeake Bay TMDL forward.

To ask them to take the Goodlatte-Thompson Amendment Out in Conference later
this year and let the EPA have enforcement actions for success the Chesapeake
Bay TMDL program.
We need for the Chesapeake Bay Plan to be effective to support the Red-throated
Loon and Surf Scooters of the Chesapeake Bay in Winter.
