Yes, he did have the eye lines but didn't look like the Back headed pictures either. Maybe a hybrid!

Not sure, but it sounds like a 1st winter male rose-breasted grosbeak. It should look almost like a female RBG except that the breast has an orangish wash over the brown streaks on the breast, and it should have a white line over the eye and another one below the eye like a female. If not, maybe something else. There are hybrids of RBG and Black-headed GB that show up scattered all over the USA.

   Happily stuffing himself with safflower seeds on the open feeder was
   a Rose breasted Grosbeak who didn't quite look like a mature
   Grosbeak!  His bib was rose streaked rather than fully red and he
had olive around his neck and head. Is this an immature one? Nothing in my book exactly matched.
